If you've ever been without a scrap of paper or a sticky note when you needed to jot something down, you know how frustrating it can be. But here's the good news: The best digital notepads out there are sleek, easy to carry, and can even eliminate the need for paper altogether.
Most digital notepads can be placed in one of two categories: paper or all-digital. The more analog notepads use actual paper on a special clipboard or pad which 'reads' what you're writing or drawing based on the amount of pressure you put on the page. But I recently discovered a free Xournal alternative for Linux (as well as Windows, Mac and Android and iOS) specifically tailored for taking handwritten text.
It's aptly called ‘Write‘.
Perfect Handwritten Notes App for Linux
Stylus Labs' Write isn't a new app but it's not merited much in the way of mentions online. Prior to today I hadn't heard of it so there's a good chance it is ‘new' to many of you, too.
Macbook air keyboard keys meaning. Write is free (but not open-source) software. It's available to download for Windows, Linux, macOS and Android.
The app is infrequently updated but don't let that put you off: it works pretty much without issue on Ubuntu (and presumably other modern Linux distros too).
Now, it's important that I stress upfront that Write is not a handwriting recognition app. You can't scrawl your thoughts down to have them instanta-magically converted into regular digital text you copy/paste elsewhere.
No, Write is pitched as 'a word processor for handwriting' and has a feature set designed for that (specifically for touchscreen and stylus, though there's no reason why it wouldn't also work with a smudgy finger). Image download app.
